Why Do You Care Whether People Say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
As December rolled around this year, it was the same, as past years, with some beating of the drum that Christianity is under attack, by the usage of Happy Holidays. Some are making it vocal, on the internet, that they don’t say Happy Holidays, but say Merry Christmas. I have no problem with that and do not see the need to voice this. I didn’t know that anyone was trying to stop anyone from wishing people a Merry Christmas. No one has ever stopped me from wishing anyone a Merry Christmas. Once, I did wish my Jewish boss a Merry Christmas, as it is almost an automatic thing to do, and he politely reminded me that he did not celebrate Christmas.
As a general rule of politeness, if I do not know the religion of the person, I will wish them Happy Holidays. If I know that they are Christian, I would wish them a Merry Christmas. If I know they are Jewish, I wish them a Happy Hanukkah You see, for me, it is about politeness and respect for other people. This is probably why those that have to deal with the public at large, those in the media or in retail, choose to say Happy Holidays. I don’t think it is about attacking Christianity, it is more likely that they are speaking to the public, which is a mixture of religions.
If you wish to say Merry Christmas, that is fine by me, but I don’t understand why it is upsetting to have someone wish you Happy Holidays. Why do you care what they say? Lighten up a bit. ‘Til the season to be jolly.
Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanza! Happy Festivus! Happy Winter Solstice! Peace On Earth!
